Introduction
This page lists the factory original internal voice and performance data and factory supplied data ROM
cartridge voice and performance data for the Yamaha DX7s synthesizer. The lists include the original factory
internal voices and factory supplied data ROM cartridge voices.
The following pages on this site also provide information on the Yamaha DX7s:

You can download DX7s SysEx patch files from the

DX7s SysEx factory voice and performance patches page.
Factory supplied ROM cartridge
The Yamaha DX7s factory supplied data ROM cartridge has four banks, which contain the following data:
Bank 1 (voice & performance memory):
- 64 voice memories
- 32 performance memories
- 2 micro tunings
- 1 system setup
Bank 2 (voice & performance memory):
- 64 voice memories
- 32 performance memories
- 2 micro tunings
- 1 system setup
Bank 3 (fractional scaling memory):
Bank 4 (voice & performance memory):
- 64 voice memories
- 32 performance memories
- 2 micro tunings
- 1 system setup
Banks one and four contain identical voice data, but bank one performances use cartridge voices and bank four
performances use the synthesizer's internal voices. Bank four is a copy of the original factory installed
internal voice and performance data; this can be used to restore the factory voices in a DX7s; instructions
on how to do this are available on my How to restore Yamaha DX7s
factory voice and performance data page.

Yamaha TX802 compatibility
The Yamaha TX802 FM tone generator contains identical internal voices to the Yamaha DX7s. They match as
follows:
- TX802 internal ROM preset voice bank A contains the same 64 voices as DX7s factory original internal /
ROM Banks 1 & 4 voice data
- TX802 internal ROM preset voice bank B contains the same 64 voices as DX7s ROM Bank 2 voice data
The TX802 performance memories DO NOT match the DX7s performance memories, as the TX802 is a
multitimbral device and the DX7s isn't.
If you need to restore the original DX7s voices and don't have a DX7s factory ROM cartridge, but do have
access to a TX802, you could use the TX802 as a voice data source (though not performance data).
Data can be transmitted directly via MIDI between the TX802 and a DX7s (or DX7 / DX7II / DXII FD) without the
need for any other device, but with the following restrictions:
The operating system of the TX802 doesn't provide the option of direct transmission of its preset ROM
bank voices, either singly or in bulk format, to another DX or device that can store such data, nor does
it provide the option of copying the entire contents of ROM banks A and B in one step to either a RAM
cartridge or the internal memory bank of the TX802 itself. Instead, each voice must first be stored
individually in each slot of a RAM cartridge or the internal memory, the contents of which can then be
transmitted in bulk directly to other devices. Even then, the TX802 transmits voice data only in
32-voice chunks, not 64; the user must select from a menu which chunk to transmit
(voices 1-32 or 33-64).
Some, but not all editor / librarian packages can access the ROM banks of the TX802, which can make the job
easier. For example, Emagic’s 'SoundDiver', a discontinued editor / librarian for the Mac, is able to
retrieve the ROM voices of the TX802 and either transmit them to the internal memory of any DX device, or
store them in a cartridge inserted in the DX. 'DX Manager', a Windows editor / librarian by FM-Alive
(www.fm-alive.com), supports Yamaha's 6 operator DX and
TX series, including the DX7s and TX802.
For more information on restoring the factory voice and performance data see my
How to restore Yamaha DX7s factory voice and performance data
page.
My thanks to Brett Kaplan for providing this useful information on TX802 compatibility.
